Offshore sport fishing, and the reefs off the Royal National Park
It was a very interesting day, for the second day a massive schools of bait fish, dolphins having a good feed and birds picking up the scraps. There were lots of activities and fun to watch the dolphins under the boat. Also on the way home a couple of humpback whales were putting on a performance.
We had near perfect sea conditions and fishing was good with a box of mixed reef fish. So we had ocean pearch, nannygai, snapper, flathead, black spot pigfish and snapper.
The Pig fish is a pinkish-red fish and has a number of darker stripes running the full length of the body. The male form has a very distinctive black blotch on the dorsal fin which is a pinkish colour and extends to the tail fin. It has a moderately large mouth and thick lips.
This fish is top quality eating but look out for some fine bones.
They prefer rocky reefs, often over sand or rubble in deeper water, like near the Hump down south were we were fishing today.
